Ben Welsh (http://palewi.re/who-is-ben-welsh/) will provide a brief overview and explain how a small band of nerds is working to rewire the largest newsroom in the West.

Members of the Data Desk will then take the stage to explain how they developed a recent project.

• Ryan Menezes (https://twitter.com/ryanvmenezes) and Zahira Torres (https://twitter.com/zahiratorres) will unpack how they acquired, analyzed and presented the data behind a first-of-its-kind survey (http://schools.latimes.com/grading-the-arts/) of arts education at more than 700 L.A. Unified schools.

• Nicole Santa Cruz (https://twitter.com/nicolesantacruz) will explain how she combines technology with old-fashioned shoeleather reporting to serve as the lead reporter for The Homicide Report (http://homicide.latimes.com/), an interactive map, database and blog that chronicles killings in Los Angeles County.

• Armand Emamdjomeh (http://emamd.net/) will map out how he created an interactive tour of Mars' Gale Crater (http://graphics.latimes.com/mars-gale-crater-vr/) that works on the open web as well as virtual reality headsets like Google's Cardboard and the Oculus Rift.

Audience members have the opportunity to ask questions of all involved.

Pizza will be served.
