Coding for Journalism Workshop (part 1)

Details
Coding and web development fundamentals
This will be the first of a 2-part series focusing on coding for data visualization and communication, and will consist of a combination of instruction and pair-programming, in which two-person teams work on small programming challenges.
We'll explore the coding concepts that are at the heart of digital journalism. We'll first understand the essence of these concepts and then switch into pair-programming challenges to cement them.
In this workshop we’ll cover the core programming concepts necessary to build data visualizations, including data structures, functions, HTML and CSS. We’ll also review how to store and examine data in JavaScript using arrays and objects.
The evening session comprises:
7:00pm: Settle in and get your future pair programming partners
7:15pm: Core JavaScript concepts for the challenges
7:45pm: Pair-programming Challenge
8:15pm: Core JavaScript concepts continued
8:45pm onwards: Pair-programming
Bring a friend who likes to build and you can pair program together, or find a programming buddy at the workshop. Bring a laptop too!
NO PREVIOUS CODING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!
This session will be led by Will Sentance, who is the CEO of the Codesmith programming bootcamp based in Los Angeles and in Oxford, England. Will is particularly passionate about teaching coding for journalism, has recently led journalism-focused workshops in San Francisco and will be leading an upcoming workshop in the UK for the BBC.
