A jaunt down the 'Ratcliffe Highway'
Details
From Limehouse, through Shadwell & Wapping, the old Ratcliffe Highway was well trod by London bound sailors and dockers.
Harrowing them every step of the way were the temptations of bars brothels and free-houses which threatened to devour their wallets before they could take to honest business in the city.
"the head-quarters of unbridled vice and drunken violence-of all .that is dirty, disorderly, and debased. Splash, dash, down comes the rain; but it must fall a deluge indeed to wash away even a portion of the filth to be found in this detestable place." - Watts Phillips, The Wild Tribes of London, 1855
This haunt will take us on an crawl through some of the cities oldest pubs; the ruin of many a young sailor, the perversion of many a maiden, whose shattered spirit may still lurk under the old road.
Let us hunt these debauched spectres together and perhaps in our reverence offer these hungry ghosts some peace.
Attendees are encouraged to bring instruments, songs and costumes and offerings to honour the dead.
