Moin, dear hikers, next Saturday the low tide in the North Sea will be just in the right time for a mudflat hike near Cuxhaven. And since it's also just the right time for a hike through the heath (though, to be honest, it always is ;), we’re combining the outing with a visit to the Cuxhaven Coastal Heath. Specifically, we will walk from Cuxhaven train station along the coast to the beach, from where we will continue for about 9 km across the mudflats. Once we are back on solid ground, we continue through the Wernerwald forest and the Cuxhaven Coastal Heath nature reserve to the village of Altenwalde. From there, we take the bus back to Cuxhaven and then the train to Hamburg.

The mudflat surface is mostly firm and easy to walk on, though often covered by a thin layer of water. However, there are scattered areas with many stones and seashells, making it difficult to walk barefoot the entire time. Water shoes or an extra pair of old sneakers are helpful in such cases and are recommended by mudflat experts. Please bring your own food and drinks as needed for the day. To access the beach and the mudflats in Cuxhaven, we each have to pay a beach fee of €4.20; please bring the matching change.

The train RE5 to Cuxhaven starts from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof at 9:06 from platform 12, section A-B (usually, but check the displays on Saturday!). We meet at 8:55 on the platform below the sign 'A' for section A and board the train as soon as it arrives. In case you're late and we don't meet on the platform, just hop on the train, we'll find you in Cuxhaven! For the backtrip from Cuxhaven we will take the train at 19:09, and should be be back in Hamburg at 20:56. The trip is covered by Deutschland-Ticket. Without D-Ticket buying a Niedersachsen-Ticket and an additional bus ticket Altenwaldde-Cuxhaven is the best option.

Please play nice and only sign up if your are 100% sure that you will join! Unreliable people (no show or late cancellation) may be excluded from future events with limited capacity. Repeat offenders will be banned from the group.

As always, this is a free event, but voluntary donations are welcome and help me cover the costs of running the group. Nobody is expected to give, only do so if you can afford it and would like to. Look out for the violet donation box toward the end of the hike.
