Cloud Native Sustainability Week Meetup in Hamburg

Details

Moin Moin!
This meetup is all about cloud native sustainability, and we are excited to participate in the CNCF cloud native sustainability week, which is a global event with around 30 meetups. We have two talks prepared to delve into the field and a lot of time after the event to socialize and catch up!

MENU:

  • Starter: Welcome back, who we are, and how are you?
  • 1st Talk (30min): CO2 responsibility - how we learned to shrink our footprints by Tim Rohwedder
  • 2nd Talk (30min): The Buzz About Green Tech: WebAssembly's Impact on Carbon Footprint Reduction by Christoph Voigt

The friendly people of Tchibo will host us and sponsor food and drinks. We will have enough time to socialize.
We hope to see you all in attendance!

TALKS:
CO2 responsibility - how we learned to shrink our footprints by Tim Rohwedder

While diving into sustainability for our webshop, we found many recommendations for optimizations. Most of them were assumptions based on outdated, sometimes decades old, measurements. Using FluxCD and Terraform, we started building short-lived test environments in GCP. This lets us benchmark different performance and co2 recommendations against each other frontend-to-backend. We expect that the result of these tests will show the impact of the tested recommendations on the carbon footprint.

The Buzz About Green Tech: WebAssembly's Impact on Carbon Footprint Reduction by Christoph Voigt

This talk aims to showcase how WebAssembly (Wasm), typically celebrated for its platform-agnostic nature and robust security, emerges as an unexpected ally in reducing the tech industry's carbon footprint.
We’ll delve into how the characteristics of Wasm and the operating models derived from it contribute to diminishing energy consumption, particularly (but not only) in data centers. Our objective is to raise awareness of Wasm's environmental advantages and encourage attendees to harness its potential in developing eco-friendly software solutions.
By the end of this talk, participants will have tangible insights into how they can leverage Wasm to not just improve application performance and compatibility but also contribute to a more sustainable digital environment.
Join us in exploring Wasm's untold green narrative and carving a sustainable future in the digital domain.
