20 Years of Peace in Northern Ireland
Details
You are invited to attend a talk presented by Branka Marijan and hosted by the CIC Hamilton Branch, titled “20 Years of Peace in Northern Ireland.” This year we mark the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Peace Agreement. While the Agreement has contributed to building a more peaceful society, much remains to be done. This talk will reflect on some opportunities and challenges for peace building in Northern Ireland. In addition, a discussion of the implications of Brexit for the GFA and Northern Ireland will be examined. Branka Marijan is a Program Officer at Project Ploughshares, a Waterloo-based non-governmental organization that works on international security issues and disarmament. At Ploughshares, Branka is leading research on the implications of emerging military and security technologies. Branka holds a PhD from the Balsille School of International Affairs; her doctoral thesis focussed on Peace-building in Bosnia and Northern Ireland. She did fieldwork in Northern Ireland for several months in Belfast. Branka attended McMaster University for both her MA in Globalization studies and BA in Peace and Conflict studies and German. She also completed a semester abroad at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Branka was born in Livno, Bosnia-Herzegovina and has lived in Hamilton since 1997.
