About us
Meetups will be one Saturday a month!
We try to aim for the 1st Saturday, but will do other Saturdays if hosts are unavailable.
Welcome to Handmade Meetups DC, a part of the Handmade Cities Initiative. Our mission is to deepen our understanding of the underlying platforms our code runs on, because we've found that this knowledge helps us create better software. We use different programming languages and work on different platforms, but we all share an insatiable curiosity for details often overshadowed by abstraction.
At the heart of our community is a passion for learning that is realized through the 'handmade' approach to project creation. This means engaging directly with the platform our software runs on, favoring a foundational understanding of programming instead of an over-reliance on libraries and frameworks, and/or choosing our dependencies deliberately.
Our meetups are designed as forums for knowledge exchange and collaboration. They feature presentations, project demos and discussions. Common topics include game development, graphics, operating systems, network programming, compilers, embedded systems, and beyond.
We aim to expand the collective expertise in low-level areas, increasing opportunities for innovation in these spaces.
We want to use our knowledge to:
- Innovate in lower-level spaces
- Help our colleagues outside of the group
- Give end users the best possible software
- Develop easier-to-understand systems so that knowledge can be transferred more effectively

Meetup #16: API Design & Single-Header Libraries
West End Public Library, 2301 L St NW, Washington, dc, USThis month, we'll have a recorded talk, followed by discussion, on API design and single-header libraries. How should we structure and program libraries to impose as few usage constraints as possible? We’ll look at the STB libraries and other examples as case studies.
We're still at the West End Library - see the location in the sidebar for details.Agenda:
- 2pm - 3pm: Library discussion
- 3pm - 4pm: Open-ended discussions, presentations, etc.
- 4pm - whenever: We'll go get food nearby!What we do
Presentations on lower-level, foundational programming topics, ethical software, knowledge sharing, mentoring, and discussion.Who we are:
We are all about handmade software. Rather than focus on frameworks, heavy abstractions, and buzzwords - we typically create projects or research topics that build an understanding of foundational computing concepts, essential data structures, and hardware/software interaction. What to bring?
Bring a laptop, project, or just a curious mind. If you're not sure you're ready to contribute, don't worry: we're all here to share our passions and hone our craft. If you arrive late:
Please enter the room quietly as to not disrupt anyone that is presenting. You can take any empty seat.6 attendees
