In retaliation, Britain punished the colonies with passage of the Coercive Acts, which closed Boston Harbor (curtailing free elections in Massachusetts), removed colonial judicial authority to Britain, and effectively instituted martial law.
Was it an act of treason? Was it a last resort to save colonial rights?
