We did this last year and everyone had a great time! So, here is the encore!
The Hike: We did this hike on a couple of times last year and found a beautiful single track trail that was in great condition, easy to follow and some great views along the way (there is also a fireroad that gets you close to our destination, but I prefer to avoid roads). It is a pretty steady climb, but nothing too difficult - about 1500' elevation gain in around 2.5 miles - the last 1/2 mile can be a challenge for some, but can be done with a little extra effort. I hear that on a clear day you can see San Jacinto!
Directions: The trailhead is about 34 miles up Angeles Crest Highway (Route 2) from the 210 Freeway in La Cañada. Park in the turnout on the left side of the road just past mile marker 58 (supposedly an Adventure Pass is not required when you are parking on the side of the road in an unimproved area) Or you can park at Buckhorn Campground – just a little further on the left (this is where we will have our cookout). There are pit toilets here - an Adventure Pass IS required. I may have some carpool space from Pasadena or La Cañada - please contact [masked] if you are interested.
Allow at least 1 hour from the junction of the 210 Freeway and Highway 2. Supposedly parking in an unimproved area in the National Forest no longer requires an Adventure Pass. Personally, I don’t trust every officer’s interpretation of the law. You may contact the National Forest Service to confirm this statement –I’m just going to display my Adventure Pass.
WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable hiking shoes, ample water, sunscreen and something for a snack break at the destination point. Items to bring for the cookout will be discussed a couple of days before the hike. If you have something particular in mind you would like to bring you can post it on the website, message me or send an e-mail to [masked] - we do want to try to coordinate items so we don't have all desserts and no entrées.
If weather is not conducive for a cookout, we will stop at Newcomb's Ranch for lunch on our return (about 6.6 miles from Mt. Waterman).
