I ledy has received a permit to enter the closed-off burned zone from the Eaton Fire to start trail work on Echo Mountain trails and surrounding trails. Please join her if you have free time.
THE PLAN
We need to do brush clearance, sand bagging, maybe some small retaining wall installment, depending on how many people sign up, graffiti removal, and anything else that needs to be done. There is a lot of work to be done since we haven't been doing any maintenance due to the fire.
HISTORY
The lower Sam Merrill Trail is the most heavily used trail in the San Gabriel Mountains. It is frequented with approximately 4,000 recreators in a single weekend. With its close proximity to the second largest metropolitan area in the U.S., it is easily accessible for day hikers and trail runners of every fitness level. But the trail has suffered greatly over continued neglect, and the rains of this past winter weren’t any help. Erosion, mini slides, and overgrowth have taken their toll on the trail and even taken a life.
Restoring the trail to a safer level is possible but only thru the support of volunteers like you. We hope you can join us now or the next time!
You will need to have:
• Long Pants and Long Sleeve Shirt
• Leather Gloves or garden gloves (I may have a couple you can borrow)
• Hiking Shoes or Boots
• A daypack with 2-3 Liters of water, lunch and snacks
• Sunscreen
We will provide:
• Hardhats
• Tools
