HPG Presents: Being a Conscientious Consumer and Constituent for Farm Animals
Details
Being a Conscientious Consumer and Constituent for Farm Animals
In this meeting we will discuss how we can make a positive impact in relieving the
suffering of farm animals through the purchasing decisions we make as Consumers and
advocacy action we take as Constituents.
We will discuss how we can be Conscientious
as Consumers in thinking about the suffering behind the animal products that we
choose to buy. For some this means being Vegan, but for me personally and others it
means shifting consumption to meats that are derived from less animal suffering. Being
Conscientious as a Constituent means using our voice to push for laws that necessitate
more humane treatment of farm animals.
A two-part approach to this problem will
eventually lead to more humane treatment of farm animals.
In the first part of the meeting, we'll look at some of the animal welfare legislative issues
currently being decided in the UK and US. In the UK, this includes the government's
plans to phase out cages for egg-laying hens, end farrowing crates for mother pigs, and
set a minimum standard on imported food whereby it must meet the same welfare
standards as British farms.
In the US, we'll look at the Save Our Bacon Act, a Farm Bill
provision that could override state laws, which call for more humane treatment of farm
animals. For attendees from other countries, we will have an open period where any
one can share current issues in their Country.
After giving an overview of the current legislative issues we will take a brief period of
about 10 minutes for those who want to reach out to their representatives on the spot
regarding these issues. Simple email/website message and phone scripts will be
provided for those in the US/UK.
I will also help you to find out who represents you, but
in general this involves a simple google search or AI query. No experience needed, your
voice as a Constituent is what counts.
In the second part, we'll turn to how we can make a positive impact through the
purchasing decisions that we make. We will discuss the various types of Meat products
and the level of animal suffering that they cause and ways we can shift our purchasing
into substitute meat or nonmeat products that result in less suffering. For me this
includes making such changes as buying Bison instead of Beef or Wild Boar instead of
Pork.
We will also have an open period where attendees can discuss the purchasing
decisions that they choose to make to alleviate animal suffering.
Lets get together and try to make a positive and sustainable difference using the power
that we have directly available to us as mindful Consumers and Constituents.
