TRAIL DESCRIPTION:
The Ray Miller Trail, a highlight of the Backbone Trail system, is one of the most stunning coastal hikes in Southern California. Beginning at the La Jolla Canyon section of Point Mugu State Park, this out-and-back trail gently winds upward along a series of smooth switchbacks with continuous panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
This hike is known for its coastal sage scrub landscape, peaceful ridgelines, and cool marine air. Expect to see wildflowers, hawks soaring above, and the deep blue ocean stretching out into the horizon. The gradual incline makes the 5.4-mile round-trip route both challenging and enjoyable—perfect for those seeking movement without extreme exertion.
We’ll take regular breaks for water, snacks, and soaking in the views. This is an excellent trail to recharge, refresh, and connect with nature in a tranquil setting. The cool ocean breeze makes this a particularly ideal option for hikers who prefer to avoid the heat of inland trails.
