Person First: Talking about Drug Use with Compassion & Respect
Details
The words we use to talk about drug use shape how people are treated, how policies are made, and whether someone feels safe asking for help.
This interactive workshop explores how language can either reinforce stigma or open the door to dignity, care, and possibility.
Together, we’ll look at common terms used to describe drug use, how stigmatizing language has potential to cause real harm, and practice more respectful, person-centered ways of speaking.
Through discussion and hands-on scenarios, participants will build skills for responding to stigma with curiosity, compassion, and clarity.
This session is welcoming to people who use drugs, loved ones, service providers, clinicians, and advocates. No prior experience needed. Come ready to reflect, practice, and explore how changing our words can change what’s possible.
