Many photographers have approached me about personal sessions and workshops. Meetup allows me to let you know about all the events I am giving, including workshops and free presentations. This group is about learning photography with master photographer Harold Davis. This group takes you to interesting places to photograph with Harold's unique perspective and guidance. About Harold: He is the author of more than ten best-selling photography books including "The Photoshop Darkroom" series from Focal Press and "Creative Black & White" and all the other books in the Creative series from Wiley Publishing. Harold is one of the most widely acclaimed digital photographers working today. This meetup is for you if you would like to take your photography to the next level, or if you want to know more about Harold's creative approach.

Of all the magical elixirs that make up a successful photograph, composition is perhaps the most fundamental, and at the same time the most elusive. What makes a composition “good”? It’s hard to define exactly, but we instinctively recognize good composition when we see it. There is an undeniable emotional response when a composition resonates with and complements the subject matter of an image.
In this hands-on workshop, we will approach composition as an instance of open-ended two-dimensional design. Photographic exercises will start with simple shapes, such as lines and circles, and proceed through patterns and repetitions, and onwards to spirals, fractals, and abstractions. Field sessions will take advantage of the “target-rich” mid-coast Maine scenery. Classroom discussions will be intended to provoke thought about composition basics and continue to enable individual integration of the process of composition into each participant’s creative practice. Overview: Gardens and gardening have been an important part of Japanese culture for more than one thousand years. In this exciting tour, noted photographer Harold Davis (author of Creative Garden Photography) and Japanese cultural ambassador Kana Hattori will lead us to explore the great gardens of Japan with our cameras.
While this is primarily a photography tour, we will also learn about related Japanese horticultural traditions, including flower arranging (ikebana), growing bonsai, and visit the flower districts and plant nurseries that Japanese gardeners frequent.
