[ONLINE] Harry Potter Discussion: The Boy Who Lived

Details

Join us at a Harry Potter Discussion Night! We'll be chatting about the main character himself, Harry James Potter. As his birthday's on July 31st, I thought it'd be a fun topic. We'll also be talking about Neville Longbottom, whose birthday's a day before!

Harry Potter's an interesting bloke. We know all about him (thank the 'third person limited' perspective), we rooted for him, yet it's rare for him to be someone's favorite character. He was also crazy sarcastic at times, but was he really more of a blank slate?

We use the theme simply as a starting point. We'll go off on any number of tangents (Potter-related or no), so it's a pretty informal discussion/chat.

IMPORTANT: We'll be on Google Meet this week! The direct link's visible to RSVPs.

Some questions we might touch on:

  • Is Harry Potter an interesting character? Did he develop through the series?
  • How did Harry's labels (the Boy Who Lived, the Chosen One, Undesirable One) define him? How did the opposing labels define Tom Riddle?
  • Was the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione 'the' central theme of the series?
  • Was the main prophecy self-fulfilling?
  • How similar were Harry, Voldemort, and Dumbledore?
  • Was Harry a competent hero?
  • How crucial was flying (and Quidditch) to Harry's personality?
  • There was another birthday in late July! How do you think Neville would have handled being the Boy Who Lived?

I hope to see you there!
