[ONLINE] Harry Potter Discussion: Halloween!
Details
Join us at a Harry Potter Discussion Night! We'll be chatting all about Halloween. Come along for ghosts, ghouls, and pesky poltergeists. As well as bats, pumpkin everything, an attacking mountain troll ... you get the picture.
Also, costumes/cosplays are very welcome (though not at all mandatory)!
As regulars will know, we use the theme simply as a starting point. We'll go off on any number of tangents (Potter-related or no), so it's a pretty informal discussion/chat. The times are also approximate: if you get here late, leave early, or want to stay for longer, it's all absolutely fine.
Some of the questions we might touch on:
- How important is the day of Halloween in the series? What can it represent?
- The Halloween mountain troll set off the plot with a bang. How did fighting the troll start the trio’s friendship?
- What’s up with the Goblet of Fire (which happens on Halloween)? Should magical contracts be a thing?
- Are the books too ‘formulaic’ in terms of holidays?
- Who do you think was the oddest ghost? Nearly Headless Nick, Peeves, the Bloody Baron, etc?
- Looking at things like Godric’s ‘Hollow’ and the Deathly ‘Hallows’, do you think there’s more of a connection between ‘*Hallow’*een and death, or Halloween and life/immortality?
- Are the magical creatures usually fantastic or monstrous?
- Some of the ‘classic' monsters are skipped over in the books: vampires are only mentioned and zombies are ‘inferis’. Even werewolves are looked on in a more sympathetic light, ghosts are comedic reliefs, and witches/wizards are run-of-the-mill. Do you wish there were more traditional monsters, or did you prefer the mythology and creativity?
IMPORTANT: We're on Google Meet this week! The direct link can be seen once you RSVP.
I hope to see you there!
