IMPORTANT: This meetup is very last minute, which I am so sorry about! But this event will be at Sunday (Nov. 2nd) at 2pm PDT. PLEASE NOTE that Daylight Saving Time is ending (thank you Annabella for the heads up)! I fully understand this date/time might not work out. If it doesn't work, I'll have a repeat event soon.

Join us at a Harry Potter Discussion! We'll be chatting about Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos). Come along to...well, to talk about death. And about life, as well as the connection therein.

In addition to crying about everyone from Hedwig to Fred (as well as some of the beloved actors), we'll talk about how life/death is represented in the "Harry Potter" series (from symbolism, ghosts, magical portraits, and much more). We'll also certainly touch on immortality, and how it seems weirdly common in this universe.

As regulars will know, we use the theme simply as a starting point. We'll go off on any number of tangents (Potter-related or no), so it's a pretty informal discussion/chat. The times are also approximate: if you get here late, leave early, or want to stay for longer, it's all absolutely fine.

Some of the questions we might touch on:

  • Which character death can’t you get over? Conversely, who do you wish had died?
  • Is death one of the major themes in these books? Is life?
  • Voldemort and others kept trying to defy death. Why? And: how successful were they?
  • Who was the 'oddest' ghost? Nearly Headless Nick, Peeves, the Bloody Baron, etc?
  • Is immortality portrayed as a good, bad, or a neutral thing?
  • Halloween celebrates the supernatural while Day of the Dead celebrates the living’s connection with the dead. Which rings truer in these books?
  • The afterlife is touched on, but never explained. Do you wish this had been a plot point, or are you happier that it was left ambiguous?

IMPORTANT: We're on Google Meet this week! The direct link is visible to RSVPs.

I hope to see you there!
