This week we'll be talking about Quidditch! Everything from the symbolism of flying, the excitement of the World Cup, the woes of the Chudley Cannons, to the (ir)rationality of the rules. Whether you're a sports fan or no, we'll have plenty of things to chat about!

The Winter Olympics are coming up in February, so I was originally planning on doing a sports discussion then. But my own schedule's a bit iffy and there's a lot of topics around Valentine's Day, so we're talking about Quidditch a bit early to make sure it doesn't get left out!

As regulars will know, we use the theme simply as a starting point. We'll go off on any number of tangents (Potter-related or no), so it's a pretty informal discussion/chat. The times are also approximate: if you get here late, leave early, or want to stay for longer, it's all absolutely fine.

Some of the questions we might touch on:

  • How does Quidditch contribute to the overall world building in the series?
  • Is Quidditch balanced well? That is, is the Seeker’s position too powerful?
  • How crucial was flying (and Quidditch) to Harry’s personality?
  • At the Quidditch World Cup, Veela and Leprecauns represent Bulgaria and Ireland, respectively, as mascots. What would the mascots be for other parts of the British Isles, or around the world?
  • How did Lee Jordan’s and Luna Lovegood’s commentary add to Quidditch for the readers?
  • It’s revealed in “Cursed Child” that Ginny played pro-Quidditch and then eventually became a sports reporter. What do you think of the characters' jobs after Hogwarts?

IMPORTANT: We're on Google Meet this week! The direct link to the Meet page is shown once you've RSVPed.

I hope to see you there!
