In 1914, only one year after the establishment of a State Park Commission, the state purchased 150 acres of the present Hurd Park as part of an initiative to obtain land for public use along the Connecticut River. Situated in the town of East Hampton on the east bank of the river, the park has grown to almost 1000 acres and is especially popular with small boat owners. Many of these boaters recognize the park by its landmark "split rock" towering above the trees.
The park is named after the Hurd family, which came to the Middle Haddam region from Massachusetts in 1710 and settled on the level bench of land high above the river.

This is a beautiful park with ups and downs and views of the Connecticut River. We will do the biggest loop we can. It should be around 6 miles. We are going to park outside the park near Hog Hill Rd.

Forecast is for 35 degrees. Please dress in synthetic layers, bring a pack with snacks and water, a camera, hiking boots or study hiking shoes are necessary. We are coming into the season of traction devices. Since this park has reasonable trails, it should be fine. No children and well behaved dogs on a leash.

Items you must consider for every event:

  • If you have an event after a hike, please do not sign up for the hike.
  • End times are only an estimate.
  • The group will not adjust speed or trail route to accommodate your schedule.
  • If you cannot attend an event, please cancel 48 hours before. Late cancellations are rude and take away the option for others to join the event.
  • Be a good hiking human.
