Day Hike: Moderate Loop in McLean Preserve
Details
First Thursday hike locations vary; every month I try to find a different place but will revisit favorites from time to time.
This is a moderate 5.4 mile loop with 600' total elevation gain through the woods and rocks on various trails in the McClean Game Refuge. Trail is a mix of the usual wooded, rocky trail and woods roads. This includes a moderately steep trek up and down Eastern Barndoor Hill.
McClean Game Refuge covers a large area in Granby and a bit of Simsbury so make sure you follow the directions to the parking area carefully.
I have a blue Kia Niro and will park in the middle of the lot with my hatch open. We'll try to start at 8:30 am promptly so please be there by 8:15. Plan on 3-ish hours depending on the pace of group. Beginners are welcome. I don't run in the woods and don't leave people out in the woods.
It may be hot; bring at least a liter of water, and maybe two liters, snacks and a pack to carry them. If it's sunny, bring sunscreen. It may rain; bring rain gear or ponchos, towels and dry clothes; we'll go rain or shine. Lightning or hurricane cancels. If the weather turns completely crappy, I'll make a decision at 7am about cancelling. Hiking boots are a must for this hike. Jeans will chafe and ruin your day. Dogs and kids 10 and up are welcome but have to be leashed in the preserve.
