Labor Day Hike: Hurd State Park, East Hampton CT

In 1914, only one year after the establishment of a State Park Commission, the state purchased 150 acres of the present Hurd Park as part of an initiative to obtain land for public use along the Connecticut River. Situated in the town of East Hampton on the east bank of the river, the park has grown to almost 1000 acres and is especially popular with small boat owners. Many of these boaters recognize the park by its landmark "split rock" towering above the trees.
The park is named after the Hurd family, which came to the Middle Haddam region from Massachusetts in 1710 and settled on the level bench of land high above the river.
We will do the biggest loop we can and may wander into George Dudley Seymour State Park. I'll aim to do about 6 miles. We are going to park IN THE PARK near the pavilion.
I have a blue Kia Niro and will park in the lot with my hatch open. We'll try to start at 9:30am promptly so plan on being there by 9:15.
Not sure about bathroom facilities.
Plan on 3-4 hours depending on pace of group. I don't run in the woods, but tend to average 30-40 minutes/mile. I do take breaks and we will stop for photos and snacks.
You will need to bring at least a liter of water, snacks, insect repellent and a pack to carry them. If it's sunny, bring sunscreen and additional water although it's pretty well forested. If it's rainy bring rain gear or ponchos, towels and dry clothes; we'll go rain or shine. Lightning or hurricane cancels. Hiking boots are a must for this hike. Jeans will chafe and ruin your day. Dogs and kids (10 and up) are welcome, but must be on a leash at all times :).
