We are happy to announce our next session on June 10 by Brandon Leach.

Snowflake Fundamentals for the SQL Server DBA

SQL Server DBAs bring deep operational instincts around performance, availability, security, data movement, and cost control. Snowflake changes many of the implementation details, but those instincts still matter. This session introduces Snowflake through the lens of a SQL Server professional, focusing on the concepts that matter most when moving from a traditional database engine to a cloud data platform.

We will compare familiar SQL Server concepts such as databases, schemas, compute, storage, indexing, statistics, backups, high availability, security, and workload management to their Snowflake equivalents. Attendees will learn how Snowflake separates compute from storage, how virtual warehouses affect performance and cost, how data is organized without traditional indexes, and why operational concerns shift from server-level management to governance, observability, access control, and consumption management.

This session is designed for DBAs, data engineers, and platform owners who understand SQL Server and want a practical foundation for working with Snowflake. Rather than treating Snowflake as just “another database,” we will focus on the architectural differences that change how you troubleshoot, tune, secure, and operate the platform.

By the end of this session, attendees will understand the core Snowflake building blocks, how they map to SQL Server mental models, and where those mental models need to change. They will leave with a practical framework for becoming effective in Snowflake without abandoning the operational discipline that makes a strong SQL Server DBA valuable.

Hope to see you all there.
Team Hassug
