GETTING THERE: The shortest route for HATs or BART people is to fly into Bangor, BGR. It's ~ 15 minutes from the national park but , however, tickets cost are ~$600 or more, right now, if coming from CA. The next best alternate is Boston, BOS. Tickets from IAH are right now ~ $300 but then its ~ 4.5 hrs to the national park. As for myself, I will be flying into BOS then renting a car. I have never been to this part of the USA and so don't mind doing a road trip. My itinerary, if you want to join me, is as follows: depart IAH, Thursday, Jul16, at 7:35AM (UA 1523). Stay a night in Boston before going to the national park. Then return to Boston Tuesday, July 21, stay another night and then departing back to IAH Wednesday, July 22 at 4:35PM (UA1479).
And in case people want to hang-out with me in Boston:
For Thursday, July 16 I have reserved a room at 40 Berkeley Hostel (http://www.40berkeley.com/) to explore Boston
And for Tuesday July 21 I plan to reserve a room at a place TBD.
CAMP SITES: We have 17 individual sites (2 tents max/site). I am guessing everyone will be in their own tent and so 34 people max for now will be in while I sort out who is camping or not, who is sharing tents or not, and assigning spots by hiking seniority. If you want to insure you can come then you can get your own campsite at the Blackwoods Campground by CLICKING HERE (http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Blackwoods_Campground/r/campsiteSearch.do?search=site&criteria=new&page=siteresult&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70990). Then let me know if you want other's to share your site/costs and I can handle it for you or let me know who you want to join you.
People who reserved tent sites for us are: 1. Hugo (3), Bob K. (3), Jacqueline (3), Curtis (2), Robin (3), Jacob (1), Chris (1). JaneC(1)
People on YES RSVP but not camping are: From CA group= 1. Julie, 2. Sylvia, 3. Lindy, 4. Bobby, 5. Sylvia, From TX group= 6. Janet, 7-8. Phil W.(+1)
So this means everyone else is camping and so far we have: 27 campers.
COSTS: The total cost for camping, if we get 2/site, will be ~$40 total regardless of the number of nights staying. That's for 4 nights and so very cheap. It may be little more if less people attend or less if we can fit more than 2 per site. Final cost will be determined when the date approaches.
CAMPING CHECKLIST FOR BEGINNERS: In case you need some guidance or advice CLICK HERE (http://files.meetup.com/1731871/H.A.T.s_Camping_List.pdf).
FOOD: The campsite is very close to the restaurants and so I'd expect most of us can just go out for meals. It's possible we can do a group dinner at the campsite one or more of the nights. We can discuss when the day approaches and once we see what the campsites have to offer as far as cooking grill etc.
