Details

The hike will start in Grantwood Park, one of the newest in the county. The land is repurposed from a former subdivision that was built in a frequently flooding area along Cypress Creek.

Gathering Place:
Grantwood Park has a new entrance off Grant Road, about 3/4 miles west of Jones Road. We will be gathering in the back of the park. Drive past the playground parking to the end of the road. Parking is on the right.

The only bathrooms are in the playground parking area at the entrance.

The Hike:
From Grantwood Park, we will follow the park roads and trails for a short tour of this former residential subdivision abutting Cypress Creek. Then start down the horse trails along Cypress Creek to the place where it forks with Little Cypress Creek. Then follow Little Cypress as far as we can before we return. Along the way we will visit East Shadowlake Pocket Park and the large open space of Cypress Park.

The trail is about 6 miles of unimproved horse trails in the native sandy soils of the region and 3 miles of paved park surfaces, most of which could also be walked on mowed grass.

COVID PRECAUTIONS:

Bring and wear a mask when not hiking. We will be dispatching hikers in small groups to be in compliance with promulgated health rules.

HEAT PRECAUTIONS:

The heat index is now regularly above 90° F before noon. Consider your heat tolerance. Start the day well hydrated. No one should have less than two liters. Three is better.

Overheating can happen to anyone. If you don't feel well or find that you can't keep up, tell someone right away. We can help. But stop walking so it doesn't become something serious.

About HATS:

HATs organizers are not guides nor do we have any special training. We are here to come up with hiking ideas and get the hike started. Expect the same risks and take the same precautions you would take if you were hiking alone, including the fitness level make long hikes. Then enjoy the hike among friends.
