Passengers are advised to arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes before their tour launches to ensure adequate time for check-in.
The Port Authority gives free tours of the Houston Ship Channel and this is a great view of the Ship Channel, first dredged to 25 feet deep by 250 feet wide in 1910 after Galveston was obliterated by the 1900 Hurricane. Now "one of the busiest seaports in the world," the Port of Houston is at the center of our energy economy. We will see ships of all sizes, petro-chemical plants of all varieties, the ruins of Brady's Landing Restaurant, and the underside of our tallest bridge yet, Loop 610's Sydney Sherman Bridge, 137 feet above the water and only hit twice by passing ships.
Other sights on the trip include the Santa Ana capture site, the Washburn Tunnel (not visible), and lots more on the 90 minute ride.
With the lengthening days, we are starting our walks later and going a bit shorter. The weather is warming and it is recommended to wear loose, light-colored clothing.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The heat in Texas is always a concern so let someone know if you are having a hard time. For more information about hiking check out this very useful hiking website: https://www.hatsandmore.org/
Our organizers are not guides nor do we have any special training. We are here to come up with hiking ideas and get the hike started. Take the same precautions you would if hiking alone, including the fitness needed to make long hikes. Then enjoy the hike among friends.
