The famous Dunston Staiths were once believed to be the largest wooden structure in Europe. It is open to the public on 1 August!
Dunston Staiths used to be the noisy heart of the industrial hustle and bustle of Gateshead's riverside.

We can step onto this Staiths, enjoy commanding views of the river and estuary, and imagine what it was like at the coal industry's peak, when around 5 million tons of coal a year were delivered by train and loaded onto ships.

Entry cost is £3.00.

Then we can go to the Staith cafe, which is next to the Staiths, and enjoy a meal or a cup of tea or coffee. We can also walk along the river if there is enough time left.
