The Preserve was acquired through multiple grants to help tell the story of the Overmountain Men, a rag-tag group of area militia that chased down a British general during the Revolutionary War and won a pivotal battle at Kings Mountain.

The route the militia took during that campaign passed right trough the Preserve property. In fact the old road bed that is now the Preserve's main trail is believed to be the exact location of their trip.

Today the Preserve is a quiet country respite that includes picnic areas, a trail to the Green River and a preserved mature forest.

Parking is near the intersection of Grays Chapel Church Rd and County Line Rd. We will meet in the parking area. There are no restrooms.

The trail is 1.3 miles each way, with a short side trail on the way back. Some reviews and the Polk Trails website say this is an easy trail. Other reviews say there are several hills and to bring a walking stick. Better safe than sorry. Dress for the weather. I intend to wear Hokas, but I will have my light hiking boots in the car in the event it has rained recently. Dogs should be fine.

Bring water and a protein snack. There is a picnic shelter near the parking area; let’s also bring lunch!
