This is an out-and-back walk in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trail runs between the Little Pigeon River and Newfound Gap Road.

We will meet at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Gatlinburg and then head to the trailhead. We will pass an old cemetery (see photo). Then we will proceed to the Fighting Creek Nature Trail, on which we will see the cabin of John Ownby. We will also visit Cataract Falls.

Let’s have lunch together. Some will want to make a day of it.

Dress for the weather. Sneakers are ok, but consider light boots if it has rained recently. I plan to take a walking stick. Bring a protein snack and plenty of water. Dogs should be ok on the trail.

Due to the government shutdown, the availability of restrooms at the Sugarlands Visitor Center is uncertain. It is advised to take care of your needs prior to arriving at the Nantahala Outdoor Center.
