Historic Downtown Columbia SC Afternoon Walk—State House, USC Campus, and More!
Details
Register at 12:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Hampton Inn, 822 Gervais Street, Columbia 29223 (enter the lobby from the Lincoln Street side). We will be walking with the Asheville Amblers, AARP, Stryder, the Cardinals Elite Walking Team, and perhaps more. The walk is free, but the Amblers do accept donations ($4 suggested). Restrooms are available at the start point.
You may choose between a 5 KM/3.1 mile guided walk and a 10 KM/6.2 mile guided walk. The 5 KM trail takes you around the State House grounds, through the USC campus, and through the historic section of Columbia. We will see public art, a bit of downtown, and more. The 10 KM trail also goes to the Governor's Mansion and the newly re-opened Liberty Park.
There are some moderate hills and stair climbing, but it is almost entirely on pavement. Tennis shoes are fine; some may want walking sticks or hiking boots.
Dress for the weather. It will likely be hot. A hat and sunscreen are recommended.
Plenty of water and a protein snack are advised as always. Wheelchairs are not recommended, although strollers ought to be ok. Dogs are welcome.
Our Meetup group offers some version of this walk every three months. It's that good! You will surely enjoy it.
Traditionally, many of us eat at Five Guys (near the start point) before the walk. There are lots of other restaurants nearby. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your meal before you join the group for the walk.
