Spring Break Friday Charleston SC Magnolia Plantation Park Walk
Details
Tour the 50-acre garden with over 900 camellias and 250 azaleas plus hundreds of other flowering species year-round. Walk through Audubon Swamp Garden and see a typical black water cypress and tupelo swamp complete with alligators. See a myriad of shore birds along the banks of the Ashley River.
There is very little elevation change, mostly flat, and the walk is almost entirely on pavement (with some boardwalk and some natural surface portions). This walk is suitable for strollers, but not for wheelchairs due to the Swamp Gardens.
Bring plenty of water and a protein snack. Dress for the weather; consider a hat and sunscreen. Tennis shoes will be fine. Walking sticks are not needed.
No pets. Alligators are present on portions of the walk. They normally avoid human contact. Do not annoy, challenge, or feed the alligators.
We will be piggybacking on this walk with the Asheville Amblers, Stryder, and perhaps others. Choose between a 5 KM/3 mile guided walk and a 10 KM/6 mile guided walk.
If you are able to register at the Hampton Inn—Historic District on Thursday morning at 9:00, please do so. Even if you can't register, come and walk with us anyway.
You must pay for admission to the plantation (NC Arboretum members, there is a reciprocal admission agreement with the plantation, so bring your Arboretum membership card for free admission). See magnoliaplantation.com for current admission fees.
You may purchase extra tickets for the following: Plantation House, Nature Train, Nature Boat, Slavery to Freedom Tour, and Audubon Swamp Tour. Again, see magnoliaplantation.com for additional information and ticket costs.
We will gather at the plantation entrance for a prompt 9:30 step-off. The address is Magnolia Plantation, 3550 Ashley River Rd., Charleston SC 29414.
The plantation does have a snack shop where you may purchase lunch if you like.
