Scaling your Software Dev Team: Round table #2 - Architecture (series)

Details
About this meetup
Topic: Architecture in a fast growing team & strategizing your architecture, factoring company strategy and context into your technical architecture: MongoDB or Cassandra? MySQL or CockroachDB? React or Angular? AWS or Google Cloud? As engineering leaders we face these and other architectural questions in all stages of a company's growth. In this crazy world, with rapid innovation in all engineering niches, how does one choose? How should the stage of your company play into the decision?
Moderator: Mike Reust, Head of Engineering at Betterment.
Betterment's engineering team has grown from 5 to 70 over the past 4 years. Come join Mike Reust, Head of Engineering at Betterment, as he shares some trials and tribulations he encountered along this journey.
Betterment (www.betterment.com) is the world's largest independent online financial advisor. They manage over $13 billion for 340,000 customers.
Please note that when you RSVP on this page it will be valid towards THIS meetup only, and no other meetups in this series. The RSVP to future meetups has not been opened, yet. About this series:
This meetup series is geared towards product-minded engineers.
When: We are planning 4 meetings in February & March (every other Tuesday starting 2/13/2018).
Who: heads of engineering and product, who manage teams between 50 to 200 developers. This is a by-invitation-only event.
How: Round table format. Up to 10 attendees max. Informal conversation.
Why: to learn from experience of peers in similar positions at similar size companies dealing with similar challenges
Where: These meetings will usually take place in a private venue
How much: we will charge $30 for each meeting to encourage commitment as well as cover a part of the cost.
Topics: Each meeting will address a different topic, such as:
• Interview Process: how can you optimize your engineering interview process to select for the right candidates? how much should he/she be oriented towards YOUR product?
• Architecture: how to strategize your architecture, factoring company strategy and context into your technical architecture?
• Team composition: Overcoming entropy by building a resilient organization that both mitigates the impact and minimizes the incidence of turmoil. Team composition over time and the myth of the full-stack engineer.
• Distributed engineering organizations: Keeping it together when managing teams in multiple locations and cultures.
For each of the topics a real-life use case will be informally shared with the group - in an interactive format (not presentations)
