Why It's So Hard to Speak Up: A Somatic Exploration
Details
Have you ever walked away from a conversation thinking:
“Why didn’t I say anything?”
“Why did I freeze?”
“Why did I agree when I didn’t want to?”
“Why is it easier to text than talk?”
Or maybe you do speak — but your voice shakes.
Your throat tightens.
Your heart pounds.
And afterward, you feel exposed.
Speaking up isn’t just a communication issue.
It’s often a nervous system issue.
Many of us learned early on that visibility wasn’t safe.
That disagreement created tension.
That using our voice could lead to rejection, shame, or disconnection.
Over time, the body adapts.
The throat tightens.
The chest braces.
The words disappear.
In this somatic healing circle, we’ll gently explore why speaking up can feel so difficult, not from a mindset perspective, but from a body-based one.
This is not about forcing yourself to be more assertive.
It’s about understanding what your body learned and creating a little more safety around voice.
In this session, we'll explore:
- How the nervous system responds to perceived social threat
- Why freezing, fawning, or over-explaining are survival strategies
- What happens in the throat, chest, and belly when we try to speak
- The difference between fear and unsafety
- How to begin reconnecting to your voice without force
You’ll be guided through gentle somatic awareness practices to notice what happens in your body when you imagine speaking up.
No pressure to share.
No pressure to “get it right.”
Just curiosity.
This space is for you if:
- You struggle to express disagreement
- You avoid hard conversations
- You feel tension in your throat when emotional topics arise
- You replay moments where you stayed silent
- You want to understand your patterns through the body
This is a trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware space.
This session is presented as a live stream, offering a gentle, low-demand way to explore somatic healing.
If this topic resonates with you, there will be an opportunity to go deeper in an upcoming experiential workshop called, When You're Triggered: How to Regulate & Speak from Truth. In this small-group workshop, we’ll work directly with real-life triggers and practice moving from activation to a regulated response.
