What is health analytics? (2016)

An introduction to the field and the purpose of this group. Over recent decades the volume and scope of (health) data has increased exponentially and analysis methodology is changing too. What does this mean for health in 2016?

Louise Lor is a statistician with 15+ years experience, more than half in health. Her health experience includes : clinical trials, drug utilisation, rehabilitation, genetics , oncology & dental statistics. Other industries she has worked with include: Market Research, Telecommunications, Banking, Government, SME.

She consults to organisations and offers training/mentoring for junior statisticians/data scientists via her company, Analysis Australia, which is sponsoring this meeting.

Finding patterns of multimorbidity using frequent set analysis (Dr Fabian Held)

Old age is characterized by a complex patterns of multimorbidity. We used network analysis, frequent set analysis and association rules to identify patterns of multimorbidity in a cross-sectional study that covered 17 morbidities in elderly men. This study is a proof of concept for identifying patterns of multimorbidity in large data sets. In this talk, Fabian will give an introduction to frequent set and association rule analysis and discuss the most prominent findings.

Dr Fabian Held is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre. His expertise in statistics, data mining, simulation and machine learning enables him to contriubute to a wide range of research projects. His main focus is on the development and self-organisation of social groups, especially the emergence of patterns of behaviour from complex networks of interactions.

Managing and Analysing Data from an Epidemiological Case-Control Study: Initial Steps (Jane Parkin Kullman)

I am conducting a case-control study of motor neurone disease. I will discuss the acquisition of our data, our data repositories, and the tools we have used in our statistical analyses. Primarily we are relying on SPSS so far, and have also explored the use of some advanced statistical tools.

Jane is a PhD candidate in the Discipline of Pathology at the University of Sydney. She worked for many years in public health and environmental consulting in the USA. She has a MS in Environmental Engineering and a AB in Chemistry and Environmental Studies.
