Please join us for a special event featuring Dr. Toshio Obi (http://www.e-gov.waseda.ac.jp/profile.htm), Waseda University (https://www.waseda.jp/top/en), Tokyo, Japan, Lori Knowles, Stafford County Fire and Rescue, and Dr. J.P. Auffret, George Mason University as they discuss the potential of robotics, apps, and technology in light of aging societies and assisting people with special needs.

Dr. Obi is a professor of ICT and Director of the Institute of eGovernment at Waseda University. He is also chair of the OECD- APEC Joint Program on Silver ICT; chair of the UNESCO UNITWIN Program on Disaster Management; chair of the National eGovernment Promotion Council at the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) in Japan; and co-founder and president, International Academy of CIO (http://www.academy-cio.org/).

Lori Knowles, Division Chief – EMS, Stafford County Fire and Rescue will be discussing Stafford County’s adoption of the innovative PulsePoint application, a system that alerts CPR trained users when someone is having a sudden cardiac arrest. After 911 dispatchers get the call of a cardiac arrest, PulsePoint notifies those nearby who are trained in CPR. The app also identifies where automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, are located. As part of the system’s announcement, Ms. Knowles highlighted that “Time, time, time, that is the key.” The app’s introduction is another step in building upon Stafford County’s designation as Virginia’s first Heart Safe community.

J.P. Auffret, PhD is Director, Research Partnerships, School of Business; and Associate Director, Center for Assurance Research and Engineering, School of Engineering. He is co-founder and vice president of the International Academy of CIO and has served on several recent Commonwealth of Virginia commissions including the Commonwealth of Virginia Health Information Technology Advisory Commission (HITAC) and the Electronic Medical Records Advisory Committee of the Virginia General Assembly’s Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS). He earned a BS in chemistry from Duke University where he was an AB Duke Scholar, an MBA from the University of Virginia and a PhD in physics from American University.

Dr. Obi and Dr. Auffret were invited speakers at 54th session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD54) at the United Nations in 2016. Their event was titled, “e-Aging: The Ageing Society and the Role of ICT Applications.”
