Intro To Python Programming For Microsoft Excel & Data Analysis: Evening Class

Details
Join us for a workshop and learn some Python programming to make you more efficient using Microsoft Excel and other tools at the office. Start automating the "boring stuff." No prior experience is needed.
*** Please note, this is a PAID workshop. For official registration, you must signup here http://bit.ly/2EBpqhI (use code "BACommunity" for 20% off)**
OVERVIEW: Python, a high level programming language, can be a great complement to or a direct replacement for Microsoft Excel. This is particularly with its capabilities to perform powerful data analysis. Though based on simplicity, Python is very powerful and popular in industries such as data science and finance. People ranging from programmers to analysts to management are using it.
Learning some Python will help you “automate the boring stuff” in your day-to-day activities and make your office work more efficient regardless of which industry that you work in. Though this workshop focuses on Excel, the language can also be used for other Microsoft applications. It can also be used for Google office tasks and more.
ABOUT: In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to use Python as an alternative to Excel. We'll show you how to use the language for data analysis and to read csv and excel files in jupyter notebooks. This workshop is a must for anyone who uses Microsoft Excel at the office or in other day-to-day activity!
We’ll start with an overview of Python packages for basic data analysis. This will be followed by basic data manipulation and cleaning in a CSV, followed by some analysis and basic data visualization as time allows.
YOU'LL LEARN:
-
How to use simple Python to load, clean, and prepare spreadsheets
-
Write your data back to an Excel-compatible format
-
An overview of the basic libraries & data types we’ll be using, predominantly Pandas
-
How to use Python to manipulate large data sets programmatically
-
Basic visualization as time allows
PRE-REQUISITES:
Some familiarity with Excel is suggested in addition to experience with Python syntax and data types. For those unfamiliar, we suggest reading Think Python (http://greenteapress.com/thinkpython2/html/index.html) for background and basic syntax items. Automate The Boring Stuff (https://automatetheboringstuff.com/) is great additional material for non-coders.
Prior to class students must install Python & Jupyter notebook. Click to install (https://test-jupyter.readthedocs.io/en/rtd-theme/install.html)
If difficulties are encountered with the above download go to the Anaconda official page and download the suite for your desired platform. Here (https://www.anaconda.com/distribution/)
If you have time, feel free to look through this (https://docs.anaconda.com/anaconda/navigator/) as well. Anaconda should create an icon on your desktop or in your applications folder from which you can launch the GUI and start a Jupyter Notebook server. If you can get one up and running that's awesome, if you have issues we'll go through it real quick tonight as well.
** Please remember that meetup registration alone is NOT SUFFICIENT, you must use the Eventbrite link (http://bit.ly/2EBpqhI) as this is a paid workshop
