Details

What we'll do: Via a video uplink from Northwestern University in Chicago, Stephen Schueller, PhD, will present "The Evolving Field of Mobile Mental Health".

In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in and research on the use of mental health technologies that aim to treat and manage mental health problems. From smartphone apps to bots, from machine learning to natural language processing, technology is poised to transform mental health services delivery. However, what out there is actually useful, and what do the useful things actually do? In this talk, Dr. Schueller will discuss the status of mobile mental health drawing from his own work designing, deploying, and evaluating mental health apps. He will present on IntelliCare, an innovative app suite developed at Northwestern’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies to aid the treatment of depression and anxiety. Additionally, he will discuss PsyberGuide, a project that identifies and disseminates information about mental health apps to empower consumers to make informed and responsible decisions. Although mobile apps have demonstrated promising potential, thoughtful work on their design and implementation is necessary to help increase their usefulness and impact.

Stephen Schueller, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine and Associate Director of Northwestern’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies (CBITs; http://cbits.northwestern.edu/). He received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011, and completed his clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. His work focuses on making mental health services more accessible and available through technologies.
He is the Executive Director of PsyberGuide, a project funded by One Mind, to identify and provide unbiased information about the effectiveness and usefulness of digital tools for mental health. In his work, he has explored the use of digital mental health resources in diverse contexts and populations, including in clinical settings as adjuncts for clinical treatment of depression, and in middle-school children and homeless youth. He also explores how these interventions can be integrated into systems of care and the importance of human support to increase engagement and benefit.
He is especially interested in the prevention of depression and promotion of well-being, and advancing integration of positive psychological interventions into clinical work.
Dr. Schueller recently gave a presentation for developers at Microsoft HQ in Redmond, WA.
