The Promise of 21st Century Cures: Three Great Speakers from J&J, IBM, AdvaMed

We have three great speakers for our next Meetup wion April 11. We will discuss the promise of the recently passed 21st Century Cures Act (which was the last bill President Obama signed).

21st Century cures implemented a wide variety of provisions across drugs, devices, and other medical specialties aimed improving patient care through foster innovation. Primary titles include innovation, development and delivery. This evening she will discuss some of the medical device provisions and high level provisions that will foster improved patient outcomes.

Our third speaker will be Zach Rothstein, Associate Vice President for Technology & Regulatory Affairs at AdvaMed (https://www.advamed.org/AdvaMedDigital), the Advanced Medical Technology Association. He was previously Deputy Senior Counsel for Public Policy at Samsung Electronics. Zach will discuss 21st Century Cures provisions relating to software, standards, breakthrough and reusable devices, and FDA’s use of the least burdensome criteria.

He will join John Michael DeCarlo of IBM Watson Health (https://www.ibm.com/watson/health/) and Diane Johnson (https://www.linkedin.com/in/diane-johnson-140b8017/) of Johnson & Johnson (https://www.jnj.com/).

Mr. DeCarlo is the Executive for Watson Health Policy. In his presentation, we’ll get an overview of IBM’s vision for transforming health and healthcare with Watson Health. More specifically, we'll learn how Watson Health is moving this vision forward across the healthcare ecosystem by leveraging advanced analytics and cognitive computing. He will also talk about the role of interoperability and real world evidence (included in the 21st Cures Act) as part of IBM’s vision.

Ms. Johnson currently serves as Senior Director, Strategic Regulatory, Medical Devices & Diagnostics. She will focus on combination products, accessories, class I and II exemptions, advisory panels, humanitarian devices and clinical trials.
