How to Chase and Shoot the Aurora Borealis (combines science, chasing tools, photo techniques, and trip planning)

With many nature photography subjects, you need to be an amateur scientist to be successful. The aurora borealis is no different. With this presentation, learn about the science of what causes the aurora borealis, what tools are available to monitor the aurora, and how to plan a successful aurora photo trip.

Carl Johnson resides in Anchorage, Alaska, with his wife, Michelle. His greatest photographic passion lies in coming to fully understand a particular location, photographing all its wonders, from small plants to vast landscapes, and wildlife of all sizes.

Carl has served as the artist-in-residence for Gates of the Arctic, Badlands, Rocky Mountain, and Shenandoah National Parkc. He was the “Environmental Issues” winner for the Windland Smith Rice International Awards in 2010. In 2017, he was awarded the Daniel Housberg Wilderness Image Award for Excellence in Still Photography, Film, or Video by the Alaska Conservation Foundation. Carl’s book, Where Water is Gold: Life and Livelihood in Alaska’s Bristol Bay, was published by Braided River in 2016. It was awarded a Silver Medal in the Nautilus Book Awards and a Gold Medal in the Independent Publisher Book Awards. He has worked as a lecturer for Tony Robbins, Princess Cruise Lines, and several remote wilderness lodges in Alaska.

Carl is an Associate Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers, a member of Nikon Professional Services and the North American Nature Photography Association. Carl serves on the Board of Directors for Visit Anchorage. He and his wife own and operate Alaska Photo Treks and Greatland Graphics.
