Tea x Zen | Buddhist Wisdom and Monks’ Tea Culture Sharing
The depth of tea is often intertwined with the wisdom of Zen.
To understand Zen, we must trace back to ancient Indian Buddhism, exploring its original teachings and practices. Later, Chinese monks integrated local Daoist philosophy, giving rise to Chan (Zen) Buddhism – a path that does not rely on external forms or complicated rituals, but values sudden enlightenment in the present moment and a free, unbound mind.
This wisdom deeply influenced Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
Each culture infused it with their own unique characteristics:
For example, Japanese monks combined Zen with the spirit of Bushido, creating their distinctive Way of Tea.
All of this is profoundly fascinating.
In this session, we will explore:
• Buddhist wisdom in India, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam
• Stories of monks drinking tea as part of their practice
• How Zen and tea can inspire our daily mindfulness
