Anabasia: An Early Spring Ritual for Okeanos and Demeter

On Long Island, spring begins in movement.

From the deep waters, life returns. It presses forward against the current, through narrowing paths, until it finds a place to take hold.

In this April ritual, we will take part in that movement: from the deep waters, through resistance, into the act of planting. We will go through that passage, tracing the conditions under which life returns here—through effort, through pressure, and without certainty of success.

We will honor Okeanos and the encircling waters from which life returns, the rivers and the nymphs who carry it inland, and the receiving earth of Demeter where growth becomes possible.

This is a ritual of emergence. It is not gentle, and it is not guaranteed. It asks what it means to take root again, and what must be risked for that to happen.

No prior experience with Hellenic polytheism is required. All people of good will are welcome!

This ritual will be indoors. We are meeting at Balance Mind Body Soul, Inc., a pagan-friendly metaphysical shop in Miller Place. We are asking for a donation of $10 to help support them. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Offerings will be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. If you have any questions, we're happy to hear from you.
