What we’re about
This group is for artists, 30's-40's, who want to connect with other creative people of faith who share a passion for fiction. The group will focus on darker literary works that explore human nature and redemption (maybe or maybe not!), but not explicitly spiritual or Christian writers. This group is for artists of any medium, of any level. While I identify with a catholic (little 'c') and sort of post-evangelical tradition I hope those of any faith tradition will feel welcome to join.
As a songwriter, busy professional, and parent, I want to create a group to help me reconnect my passion for literature and meet cool people. I've found that reading a piece of short fiction is a great way to revive my creative process.
Unlike a traditional book-group, any time you join we'll be onto a new story so you'll never be behind.
General format:
- Come with the story read, with notes and observations, and if you like, ready to read an excerpt of your favorite prose from the story.
- Review discussion questions (the same each week) I will facilitate with some basic questions to keep us on task.
- Respect the conch. (Lord of the Flies reference!) Try to share your passion mindfully, without dominating the discussion. Don't make me get a timer ;-)
- We will try to keep the discussion portion of the group to an hour, followed by an informal hangout.
- We may meet at breweries in the downtown KC area. If you're in recovery and would like to join please let me know and I'll join you in solidarity.
- Please bear with me as I try to figure out how to facilitate a meetup group. Feel free to offer helpful suggestions if you like.
