Annual Jordan Lake Cleanup During NC Big Sweep

Details

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Clean Jordan Lake's annual cleanup event on Saturday, October 1. This event is held in conjunction with NC Big Sweep week. We will use volunteer boaters to ferry the walkers out to the southern end of Wilderness Island, an area of shoreline along the east side of the Haw River Arm (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?client=firefox-a&hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=211094745214091251370.0004a4438e0041537b893&z=14). Many tires and other large trash objects must be removed along with bottles, cans, etc. Volunteer walkers and boaters will meet at the Poes Ridge Boat Ramp (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=211094745214091251370.0004a4438e0041537b893&msa=0), off of Jordan Dam Rd, Moncure, NC. Volunteer boaters will register and launch at 8:30 am. Walkers will register at 9:00am and be loaded onto boats. A Boat U.S. Foundation has provided a grant to CJL to help us reach out to the boating community for more assistance.

Thanks to the generosity of Amante Pizza and Pasta and of Subway, a lunch of lasagna, baked ziti and subs will be available starting at 12:30pm. Thanks also to Ashley Steele, a faithful CJL volunteer for donation of bottled water. Raffle prizes will be awarded at lunch.

We hope to attract even more volunteers than last year when about 200 walkers and boaters removed 700 bags of trash and 600 tires!

Special Note for Volunteer Boaters. Boaters should have an insurance policy that covers personal liability for passengers.

What to Wear? Wear closed shoes such as running shoes (no sandals or flip flops), long pants, long sleeve shirt and hat (all to protect against chiggers and ticks). Clean Jordan Lake will provide gloves.

Liability Waiver Forms. All volunteers are required to complete the appropriate liability waiver form for Adult (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14882380/Clean%20Jordan%20Lake%20Adult%20Waiver%20Form.pdf) or Minor (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14882380/Clean%20Jordan%20Lake%20Minors%20Waiver%20Form.pdf) . We are restricting volunteers to those over the age of 10. Volunteers between the ages of 10 and 18 need to have the signature of a parent or guardian on the liability waiver form. Minors between the ages of 10 and 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Another Volunteer Option for Oct. 1. The Jordan Lake Environment Education Center will sponsor a shoreline cleanup for a section at the northern end of the lake along Martha's Chapel Rd. between Farrington Rd. and Rt. 751. For details, contact Eleanor Herr, herre@mindspring.com, tel. 919-360-6418. The meeting place will be the Jordan Lake Business Center, 1434 Farrington Rd., Apex.
