2024 Fall Cleanup

Details

We'll be cleaning the stretch of shoreline along Jordan Dam Rd, from the Poe's Ridge boat ramp to the Jordan Dam visitor's center. Our colleagues at the Army Corps of Engineers report that this area picked up a lot of trash due to the heavy rains from Hurricane Debby.

This event is part of several larger events:

  1. The National Environmental Education Foundation's National Public Lands Day, who will provide a free day-use coupon to every volunteer. Each coupon will entitle the recipient and their family or vehicle companions to one “fee-free” day at any participating federal recreation or visitor site within one calendar year (9/28/2024 – 9/26/2025).
  2. Keep Durham Beautiful's NC Big Sweep celebration!

In event of bad weather on October 12th, we will postpone to the following Saturday, October 19th.

WHERE TO MEET
Meet at the US Army Corps of Engineers Visitor Center. Parking is limited, so please carpool or get dropped off if possible. There are restrooms available on the far side of the building.

WALKERS: You will be divided into groups at registration.

BOATERS: Boaters are needed to haul trash back to the dumpster at the Corps Bulkhead. Launch from Poe's Ridge Boat Ramps off Jordan Dam Rd and stay in the area as we gather. You'll receive further instructions on where you're needed.

We're loaning 2-way radios to boaters for communication.

WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE ACCOMPLISHED
Since 2009, more than 900 cleanup events have attracted more than 9,300 volunteers to our cause. Beauty and wildlife habitats have been restored along 30 miles of the worst impacted shoreline. More than 22,000 bags of trash (roughly 220 tons!) have been removed. Many other objects are too large to fit into trash bags such as basketballs, propane gas tanks, hot water heaters, car parts, pesticide sprayers, gasoline cans, and pails of industrial adhesives. In addition, volunteers have rolled 5300 tires, many still on rims, to boats and off again at boat ramps to stack for pick up by Liberty Tire.
