Identity: Chosen or Received?
Details
What is identity?
We often speak about identity as though it were obvious: our identity is something that tells us who we are. But what exactly are we talking about when we use the word? Is identity something we have, something we are, or something we construct?
And if identity is something we have, where does it come from? Some aspects of ourselves seem to be given to us—we are born into a particular family, culture, language, body, and historical situation. Other aspects seem to be chosen: our beliefs, values, commitments, and the kind of person we try to become.
So is identity primarily received or chosen? How much of who we are is actually up to us?
Finally, perhaps we should question the premise itself: how important is identity? Does understanding or defining who we are really matter, or do we sometimes give the idea of identity more significance than it deserves?
