"Emotional Intelligence": Introduction

Details
Let's start discussing the book "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman!
Location: Oodi, group room 7.
It's going to be a series of many meetings. Let's start from introduction of the term. It is very much advised to read Chapter 3 "When smart is dumb" of the book. This chapter gives an overview of the term and highlights few approaches that explain it.
Before Goleman, Gardner's 1983 book “Frames of Mind” provided 7 key varieties of intelligence:
- Logical-mathematical: quantifying things, making hypotheses and proving them.
- Linguistic: finding the right words to express what you mean.
- Spatial: visualizing the world in 3D.
- Bodily-kinesthetic: coordinating your mind with your body.
- Musical: discerning sounds, their pitch, tone, rhythm, and timbre.
- Interpersonal: sensing people’s feelings and motives.
- Intra-personal: understanding yourself, what you feel, and what you want.
Salovey and Mayer offered an elaborated definition of emotional intelligence, expanding these abilities into five main domains:
- Knowing one’s emotions. Self-awareness.
- Managing emotions.
- Motivating oneself.
- Recognizing emotions in others.
- Handling relationships.
In this chapter, Goleman also provides an interesting description of purely IQ vs purely EQ types of men and women. It would be nice to discuss it in the context of modern-day understandings of sex and gender.
Hope to meet you soon! :)

Primary purpose of the club is to learn psychology together. We target a high-quality discussion more than socializing with as many people as possible. It is very encouraged to stay on topic and provide a good argumentation.
