"Emotional Intelligence": Self-Awareness

Details
Let's continue discussing the book "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman! Today's topic will be Self-Awareness (based on Chapter 4).
Location: Oodi, group room 7.
Self-awareness, in short, means being “aware of both our mood and our thoughts about that mood” (John Mayer). Self-awareness can be a noncreative, nonjudgmental attention to inner states.
Distinctive styles for attending to and dealing with emotions (Mayer):
- Self-aware. People are aware of their moods as they are having them. Autonomous and sure of their boundaries, are in good psychological health, and tend to have a positive outlook on life. When get into a bad mood, they don’t ruminate and obsess about it, and able to get out of it sooner. In short, their mindfulness helps them manage their emotions.
- Engulfed. People often feel swamped by their emotions and helpless to escape them. Are mercurial and not very aware of their feelings, so that they are lost in them rather than having some perspective. They do little to try to escape bad moods, feelings that they have no control over their emotional life. They often feel overwhelmed and emotionally out of control.
- Accepting. While these people are often clear about what they are feeling, they also tend to be accepting their moods, and so don’t try to change them. There are two branches of accepting type: those who are in good moods and so have little motivation to change them, and those who are in bad moods and are resigned to their despair.
Hope to meet you soon! :)

Primary purpose of the club is to learn psychology together. We target a high-quality discussion more than socializing with as many people as possible. It is very encouraged to stay on topic and provide a good argumentation.
Please get familiar with our club's constitution in "What is it about?" section in the Meetup group description.
