Cataloochee Valley ELK; (GSMNP)

Details
We are the Sloth Hiking Group: “We will get there when we get there.” We dare to go where the ‘real’ hike groups don’t !!
I am going to Cataloochee Valley in the Smoky Mtn Nat'l Pk to explore, picnic and, hopefully, catch the Elk during their 'rut' bugling. Up to 16 are welcome to join me.
THOSE WHO MIGHT WISH TO DO THIS ‘ON THEIR OWN’ MAY CONTACT ME, via email (see below), FOR EXACT DIRECTIONS. (mid Sep thru-Mid Oct)
Drive time: 1.25 hr/55 mi (one way) Via I-40W to exit 20 (Jonathan Creek) (Smoky Mtn Natl Pk Parking Tags reqr’d – I will contact drivers with the info)
**Special Note**: The last 5 miles of the drive are not suitable for low sedans. It is a switchback climb up a mountain gravel road. Those with excessive fear of height or prone to carsickness will be uncomfortable on this road.

DESCRIPTION;
This event is suitable for non-hikers and “grade school-age” grandchildren.
Since the storm destroyed much of the valley road, we will park near the church and see how far we can walk into the valley.
The elk usually overnight in the valley. They leave the valley – into the forest – before 9am. And return, sometimes, by 4- 5pm. There is never a guarantee. But, if we get lucky, it's an event not to be missed.
Cataloochee Valley has a historical home, church and barn which we will take time to explore.
The plan is to arrive early afternoon to give time to explore and 'PICNIC' before the elk 'present' themselves.
Bring a folding chair, camera, water & food.
Incessant prattlers will be assumed to be having an affair. Obstreperous raucous yawping is discouraged.
All hikes are at your own risk. You are responsible for your OWN safety and adequate equipment.
Waiver: There are certain risks inherent in any outdoor activity.
