What we’re about
We would like to welcome scientists, engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs, students and all who are interested in how Computation-based Science and Technology helps the world advance.
The group is created by the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC).
Those interested in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Modelling and Simulations, applications of High Performance Computing are welcome to join us. We plan to have weekly events with speakers who will discuss their topics within one of these fields.
It would be great if we get to know you better and build a community together.
For that, we invite you to join the our slack group and introduce yourselves using the following link.

Bio:
Manolis Koubarakis is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He leads the Artificial Intelligence team (http://ai.di.uoa.gr). He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the National Technical University of Athens, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, and a diploma (B.Sc.) in Mathematics from the University of Crete. He is a Fellow of EurAI (European Association for Artificial Intelligence) since 2015, Member of the EurAI Board since 2022, and previous President of the Hellenic Association for Artificial Intelligence. He is a member of the Advisory Board that implements the Hellenic National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. He has published more than 200 papers that have been widely cited (8015 citations and h-index 47 in Google Scholar) in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (especially Knowledge Representation and Constraint Programming), Databases (especially temporal and spatial databases), Semantic Web, Knowledge Graphs and Linked Data (especially geospatial and Earth observation data), and Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing. His research has been financially supported with a total amount exceeding 9 million Euros by the European Commission, the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, the Greek General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the European Space Agency and industry.
Abstract:
I will present a data science pipeline that starts with geospatial data in various formats coming from heterogeneous sources (e.g., satellite images, administrative data) and ends with a complete user application. The pipeline covers the whole lifecycle of such data including transforming into appropriate formats, interlinking with other data, integrating with other data sources, storing and querying efficiently, publishing on the Web and developing a visual application. Each stage of the pipeline is supported by tools that are based on semantic and linked data technologies.
The talk presents research results obtained by my group (https://ai.di.uoa.gr/) in the last 13 years and summarized in the recent book "Geospatial Data Science: A Hands-on Approach for Building Geospatial Applications Using Linked Data Technologies" which was recently published in the series ACM Books (https://dl.acm.org/doi/book/10.1145/3581906).Venue: Fresnel Auditorium, The Cyprus Institute, Athalassa Campus
