May 2026 - The Things You Wish You Knew About Power BI
Details
We have many folks in our group that are new to Power BI. In this session, we’ll share practical, hard‑earned lessons from building and scaling Power BI solutions - focusing on the things we wish we had known when we first started. We’ll cover how to use Power Query versus the report layer effectively, why data modeling should come first, and common design and performance pitfalls to avoid. We’ll also discuss best practices for aggregating versus detailed data, report security and sharing strategies (workspaces, apps, and links), automation techniques like folder-based ingestion and templates, and how tools like TMDL can support maintainable, team‑based development. Throughout, we’ll highlight tips, tricks, and design considerations - especially relevant in higher education - to help you build Power BI reports that are scalable, secure, and easier to maintain over time.
