Explore the Morris Canal Traces - Lake Hopatcong to Waterloo Village

• This hike is a point-to-point walk, meaning the endpoint will be different from the starting point. You'll need to arrange for an Uber or coordinate shuttle rides with fellow hikers in advance. Everyone will initially be placed on the waitlist. Please comment below if you're looking for someone to share a ride with, or let me know if you have transportation arranged. Distance: Could be 10 to 13 miles, depending on how the old canal route works out.
Start: Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum (260 Lakeside Blvd, Landing, NJ 07850)(40°54'59.2"N 74°39'53.1"W)
Finish: Waterloo Village Historic site Parking Lot (Waterloo Road
Stanhope, NJ 07874) (40°54'52.2"N 74°45'32.3"W)
The Morris Canal was fed by Lake Hopatcong, its highest point, and ran both east and west with locks and planes to handle elevation changes.
This won’t be a typical trail hike—we’re exploring the canal’s western route from Lake Hopatcong, tracing what remains of its historic path.
Photo 1 shows our possible walking route (orange) and the original Morris Canal path (blue). We’ll start from Lake Hopatcong & the Feeder, head west along the canal, and explore Planes 1–4W (skipping 3W—it’s not reachable) and Locks 1–3. Expect a mix of greenway and road walking.
